JAZZ 1959 Tributes to Sidemen

QUINCY JONES の1959年 [26歳]
(Quincy Delight Jones Jr. / 1933-03-14 IL, USA / 2024-11-03 LA, USA, aged 91)

There was a report on November 3rd that Quincy Jones passed away at the age of 91. I was saddened to hear this, as I had planned to publish this article while he was still alive. I offer my condolences.

Quincy Jones is famously known as the producer of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller,' but he was also a musician who won multiple Grammy Awards, truly a 'brilliant genius.' While blending various music genres, including hip hop, he always considered himself a 'true bebopper' and mentioned in his autobiography, 'Jazz was always by my side.'

His musical journey as a child embodied the genius of jazz. It began at the age of 11 when he discovered an upright piano at a Chicago recreation center. At 13, he followed Count Basie's band, and received free trumpet lessons early in the morning from the busy Clark Terry (who seems to have an incredible personality). Soon after, he was able to compose and arrange music.
At 14, he formed a bond with Ray Charles(p, vo), who was 16 at the time, in Seattle. After entering Seattle University, he graduated from the Slinger House in Boston (later known as Berklee College of Music). While in Boston, at the age of 17 in 1951, he joined the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, where he recorded his first piece, 'Kingfish.' His talent in arranging and composing for big bands helped him gain recognition, and by the age of 20, he was already a bandleader.

He was known as a self-proclaimed 'ladies' man' with five children from different women, but he was also an extraordinary 'people person.' Many musicians have collaborated with him over the years. The renowned artists featured on albums such as 'We Are the World (1985)' and 'Back on the Block (1989)' reflect his wide-reaching influence.

In a previous article, I mentioned Benny Golson(ts), who was a close companion of his when they lived together in New York City. They even collaborated on an album at the age of 26 in 1959.
A famous recording of his from 1959 is 'The Birth of a Band!' In this album, alongside his mentor Clark Terry (trumpet), there are other close musicians. He also recorded 'I Remember Clifford' in tribute to his close friend, Clifford Brown, which was composed by Benny Golson.
